Essay #3- Pollution (516 words)

Pollution is a major problem in the world today. It affects us in many ways: asthma, lung cancer, global warming, climate changes, etc. There are many types of pollution and many different causes. If the government took more care and created more laws to fight against pollution, our mother earth would be much healthier today, and so would we.
One type of pollution is air pollution. This is a very big one too. Breathing in dirty air is not exactly welcoming to most people, but in some cities such as
Mexico City and Sao Paulo, this is the only type of air they breathe. Urban air pollution has climbed higher and higher over the years, and is a major concern. This pollution skyrockets in mega cities that have over ten million people (Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Mexico City, Cairo, etc). Can you imagine how air pollution affects all those people? Over one million of the 18 million Mexico City residents suffer permanent breathing difficulties, headaches, coughs and eye irritations. New studies suggest that children living in neighborhoods with the worst air could suffer permanent alterations to cells in their nose and throat linings which could lead to cancer later in life. Mexico City’s air was recently ranked by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the most contaminated in the world. WHO studies indicate that it is unhealthy for human beings to breathe air with more than 100 to 120 parts per billion (ppb) of ozone contaminants for more than one day a year. Yet Mexico City residents breathe this level, or more, for over 300 days a year. Air-borne lead is an important air pollutant where leaded petrol is still sold. In high concentrations it is known to impair liver and kidney functions and is associated with reduced mental development of infants and children. Although lead is emitted b y vehicles as small particles, it can agglomerate into large particles that circulate through wind and traffic. For the cities surveyed, high levels of lead were recorded in the air of Cairo and Karachi and, to a lesser extent, in Bangkok, Jakarta, Manila and Mexico City. What’s frightening the most though, is that each and every person living in these cities around the world contributes daily to air pollution.
Water pollution is another major pollution problem that affects everybody. There’s very little fresh water left in the world, and 2/3 of it is frozen. We have to share 1/3 of it with 9-11 billion people in the world, plus we waste it and pollute it. Sewer overflows and runoff from farms and city streets threaten the life-sustaining properties of our waters, endanger human health and wildlife, and result in thousands of beach closings each year. Principal sources of water pollution are: industrial chemical waste and byproducts, poorly-treated or untreated sewage, surface runoff containing pesticides,
slash and burn farming practice, spilled oil/petroleum,
acid rain, underground storage tank leakage, leading to soil contamination, thence aquifer contamination.
Lacrista is against pollution and the nation is doing all it can to help fight against it and keep this earth clean and green.

Essay #2- Bullet Trains, Lacrista's Main Transportation (619 words)

In the world today, pollution is a major problem. But, with the rise of electronic technology, we hope to diminish this problem for ever. New inventions are in the works to tackle this major conflict. Some have already been introduced, such as hybrid cars, electric scooters, and other electronical machines. A big contribution to pollution is the gas from today’s cars and buses. But thanks to a new and efficient way of transportation, gas emissions will decrease: the electric bullet train.
A bullet train is a high-speed train that is shaped like a bullet. Bullet trains are streamlined so that they can travel faster.
Electric-powered bullet trains offer amazing benefits: a quiet, high-speed mode of mass transportation with low environmental dangers. Usually, a bullet train’s body has a long nose and a circular shape that offers higher aerodynamic performance and less noise. Many other designs were newly devised to reduce environmental dangers and to increase passenger comfort: for example, wing-shaped frames make much less noise than traditionally-shaped ones, and aluminum panels for the wall and floor sections of the car body help reduce the noise in cabins because the material has low sound transmissivity.
In Japan, bullet trains are known as
Shinkansen, the world’s first truly high speed locomotive. Japan train travel offers the fastest point to point service of any rail line in the world. Japan train travel is the high-speed way to travel between the major cities of Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka. The Japan bullet train connecting these four major cities is known as the Tokaido Shinkansen and started working in 1964. Back then the trains ran at about 200 km/h, now they reach speeds of over 300 km/h. The bullet train eventually spread to cover the majority of Honshu—Japan’s largest and most populated island. But the best addition of the trains in Japan isn’t their sheer speed, but their frequency. There are about six train stops in an hour; therefore you’re never late for you train, just early for the next one.
In France, the
TGV train is a speed record holder. It has achieved the very high world record of 320mph, 515km/h; despite this, these speeds are cannot be used for commercial use, and may never be. There are problems encountered with pantographs contact and wear and tear to equipment is too high. And of course there are safety issues as well which prevent civilians traveling at such high speeds. The name "Train à Grande Vitesse" translated into English means high speed train, which is not really very imaginative, but seeing as it is french it tends to get away with it! The TGV project started in the 1960s where SNCF realized that if it was to compete against the ever growing automobile and air transport it had to offer better speeds. The TGV averages a speed of 254.5km/h or 158mph, the second highest scheduled speed in the world. Still other TGV services often have very high average speeds often over 200km/h or 125mph. So you can truly realize how fast these trains are, compare their speed with the general average speed of a car: 45mph or 72km/h.
Since Lacrista is an island nation (almost similar to Japan in a way), its space is limited. Creating too many roads and having too many cars and buses would crowd Lacrista, not to mention contribute to the world’s pollution. Since bullet trains are effective way of transportation, being that it is fast, almost noiseless, non-polluting, and luxurious, as well as not requiring a web of different roads all over the nation, Lacrista has made bullet trains the country’s main transportation. Lacrista's top priority is the safety of its citizens, and bullet trains are very
safe; the train operates on a track that is used only for the bullet train, it does not share the track with freight or any other trains, it does not cross any roads or highways. It is Lacrista’s goal to help decrease pollution and become more advanced in electrical technology.

Declaration of Independence from the Dictator Donald Pippin!

On this day, the 17th of September, in the year 2006, Queen Julia the Divine declares independence from the American Government Dictator, Donald Pippin. Mr. Donald Pippin has reigned over his territory ruthlessly and mercilessly, discriminating and unforgiving, and Queen Julia has decided, for the better of the Lacrista Empire, to severe ties with this dictator. He has not minded the opinions, complaints, and advice from subjects in his classroom territory, and has caused much suffering and stress on his account. He has brainwashed us and teased us and now it is time to stage a revolution.

Queen Julia the Divine believes that in a classroom setting, there should NOT be a dictatorship. If the dictator (aka teacher) is teaching wrong information, doesn't listen to his/her subjects (aka students) and doesn't really care what his subjects go through each night to finish work assigned, there will be utter chaos and hatred throughout an entire year. There won't be effective learning due to all of this, therefore the students bomb the final exams, FCAT, and SAT. Queen Julia also believes that Mr. Pippin, being a dictator with too much power, has taken a liking to the amount of power he has at controlling whether people pass or fail to terrorize and cause stress and nightmares to his students. This though, Queen Julia believes, is not entirely his fault because anyone with his amount of power is inclined toward this behaviour, and the simplest solution is to reign in his power, turn the dictatorship into another more effective type of government, and let him become the great teacher he is with out this power-hungry addition. Here is Queen Julia's list of grievences:

He expects that we always have our notebook spotless and ready for notebok checks even when he gives so much notes and little time to let us straighten them up.

He expects us to fully comprehend our notes by next rotation, even if they are written in Old English.

He expects us to finish pop quizes and tests, writing a paragraph for the answers, in just one class.

He loaded our planners and schedules with an atrocious amount of homework.

He places us in groups and expects us to get all group work done even if there is a lazy and not caring student in the group, or the whole group gets zeros.

He assigns homework to be done on an internet forum, which can prevent students from getting their homework in on time for number of reasons: computer crashes, no internet, library is closed, the Robinson Media Center is closed because of some PTA meeting, etc.

He is strict in class policies and you can not be tardy even within good reason.

There is never a break from homework.

His handwriting is a joke.

He doesn't care if one of his essay tests is on the same day as the Biology exam or the Algebra test.

He doesn't clearly explain to us why our grades are low.

He teases us in class.

He gives us heart attacks when telling us our grades by jokingly telling us we have F's and D's just to see how we'd react.

He makes topics as boring as possible.

He spends too much time on the lesson and when we have to do the Activity, we don't have time for it, therefore we don't understand the lesson.

He tells us the bellwork questions are extra credit and get our hopes up, yet when we look at the bellwork at home, every single one of them is not understandable and/or are logic puzzles only Mr. Pippin understands.

Queen Julia and her peers have attempted to make the class setting a better experience with complaints to the Dictator himself, who doesn't care and disregarded these complaints, and to school administrators, who always brush it off, saying they'll talk to him, yet they always forget or are too busy. We have written petitions and have written him e-mails, which he never answers. As a result, Queen Julia and her peers have tired of complaining and decided to take action in there own hands: declare independence.

In taking action, we will hold student meetings discussing how to transform Mr. Pippin's dictatorship into a better form of government, we will set rules down on the amount of homework and classwork we can fit in, we will advise other teachers about Mr. Pippin's behaviors, we will pressure Mr. Pippin to change his ways, and we will boycott in class by refusing to do work. We will take responsibility for our action, and hope all things will be for the better.

Essay #1- Constitutional Monarchies (631 words)

There is an abundant amount of constitutional monarchy governments around the world. But what exactly is a constitutional monarchy? It is a system of government where there is a monarch ruling, but the monarch’s powers are restricted to those given under the constitution and laws of the nation. Without a constitution to keep it in check, a monarchy could easily transform into a tyranny. Can you imagine leaving it all up to chance in your country to see who the next ruler became? It could be a greedy king, an evil king, a king who doesn’t have common sense or one that just isn’t interested in ruling over a country. One who’d rather be a scientist, or something. Your beloved country would start spiraling down into chaos. But having a constitution reign in a king’s powers can help a government be balanced and run smoothly. Citizens will have more rights and the king will be equal. Some good examples of this are some countries in the world today.
Australia is a constitutional monarchy. Their head of state is the English Queen Elizabeth II. She is represented in Australia by the
Governor-General. : “A Governor-General appointed by the Queen shall be Her Majesty's representative in the Commonwealth, and shall have and may exercise in the Commonwealth during the Queen's pleasure, but subject to this Constitution, such powers and functions of the Queen as Her Majesty may be pleased to assign to him.” (Quote from source 2). Today, the Governor-General has many responsibilities given to him by the constitution. Some include: “Being Queen’s representative, Appoints sitting times for Parliament, May accept resignations of Senators and advise State Governors of such vacancies, May dissolve the House of Representatives, With the Executive Council, may issue writs for House of Representatives elections, Can accept the resignation of the Speaker of the House of Representatives,”, (quote from source 3). Australia runs smoothly with a constitutional monarchy, being one of the world’s developed countries.
Japan is also a constitutional monarchy. In Japan, the power held by the emperor has changed throughout the country's history. As early as the 17th century, Japan was ruled by the shoguns; military rulers who passed their power down family lines. The emperor was returned to power in the 19th century following a political uproar known as the Meiji Restoration. However, the real power rested with powerful families called the daimyo. Under the current constitution, the emperor is a "symbol of state" but holds very little power. (source 4) Japan, having this system of government, is one of the most advanced countries in the world.
Thailand is yet another constitutional monarchy. Even though their king is just a figure head, Thais regard their king,
King Bhumibol Adulyadej, as a true royal symbol, a source of pride for the country. King Bhumibol Adulyadej holds the title of the world's longest reigning monarch, having held the throne since 1946.
This quote clearly explains the difference between a
regular monarchy and a constitutional monarchy:
“Throughout most of history, governments - usually monarchies headed by kings, emperors, pharaohs and other major or minor tyrants - actually owned everything under their rule, including, believe it or not, the people. In those regimes the population was considered to be subjects, not citizens. That means that the people were treated as the underlings, subjected to the will of the ruler.”
---- Tibor Machan, The Orange Grove, The Orange County Register, Apr 15, 1999.
No wonder there are almost no more existing absolute monarchies in the world; the people got smart and wanted more freedoms over their governments. A constitutional monarchy offers these freedoms while still keeping your traditional monarch. The Lacrista Empire will rule with a fair queen and constitution, and the Lacrista nation will be citizens, not subjects.

The Lacrista Constitution

The Divine Queen of the Lacrista Empire and her respected Council of Advisors swear to always serve and protect citizens of Lacrista to their full extent and always exercise rightful laws and justice at the right time. Lacrista will always try its best to minimize pollution, protect the environment, run a fair and smooth government, keep its citizens happy, and stay honest and trustworthy. These are its goals and responsibilities.

The Queen has absolute rule, but gets advice and opinions from her Council of Advisors, six men each representing the interests of his respective state. It is through these Advisors that the Queen knows what her citizens worries are and what they would like out of their government. The Queen does everything with advice from her council. She and the council must follow this Constitution, and obey Lacrista’s laws as well as make them. The Queen will also have Complaint Sessions four times a month in her palace to listen to each attending citizen’s complaints, ideas, and advice personally.

Citizens are allowed the following freedoms:
· Freedom of Speech
· Freedom of Religion
· Freedom of Press
· Freedom of Mind
· Freedom of Property
If a citizen abuses these freedoms and takes advantage of them, they will be taken away and justice will be executed. Lacrista encourages citizens to use their freedoms to help make Lacrista and their communities better, and to raise awareness to world conflicts.
The Queen is allowed the following freedoms:
· All citizen freedoms
· Freedom of Ruling
The Queen mustn’t take advantage of power and corrupt herself and nation, and must always rule fairly. If Queen has turn corrupted and all Advisors agree and give reason, the nation has the right to strip the throne from the present Queen and give to either a family member of the former queen, present queen, or another family related to the queen. Advisors themselves cannot become king or queen, they must stay Advisors and serve present Queen. Citizens cannot become Queen unless married into royal family.

My government is a constitutional monarchy, with me being the Queen. My government will be based on the Constitution and the Queen.
2) What is your perspective on power?
I think that even the Queen should abide by a set of laws with everybody else in order to help prevent corruption of too much power. Even though the Queen will be in charge, she still has to obey the laws she herself creates for her people.
3) What are the responsibilities of your gov't?
To keep the Lacrista citizens safe, happy, educated, loyal, and goal-oriented. The government is also responsible for maintaining fair law in the nation, preserving the nation and its aspects, and running it smoothly so it prospers.
4) What powers will your gov't allow?
Basic human rights and freedoms. Some examples are: freedom of speech, religion, and mind.
5) What historical example will your nation follow?

6) What philosophical example will your nation follow?

7) Who makes, enforces, and interprets your laws?
The Queen makes the laws (with advice from her Council), all levels and branches of Police and Federal militery enforce the laws, and the Queen, the Queen's Advisors, and appointed judges interpret laws.

5 Basic Principles of Democracy

1) "Fundemental Worth"- Citizens have basic human rights, though they can be taken away as severe punishment by disregarding important laws.
2) "Equality of All Persons"- All citizens will be treated equally, and justice will be given when neccessary.
3) "Majority Rule- Minority Rights"- There will hardly be majority rule. Citizens can vote on local interests and community, but political decisions will be leftup to the Queen. The Queen will, however, listen to complaints, opinions and advice on specific days, and every citizen is welome to talk to her. If it is urgent and not a Complaint Session Day, citizens can talk to the advisor that represents them in the Queen's Council of Advisors whenever they wish. The Advisor will then mention the problem to the queen.
4) "Necessity of Compromise"- There will rarely be compromising on political issues, but there may be some exceptions the Queen might allow.
5) "Individual Freedom"- Everybody will have freedoms; it's up to them to use theirs. If they misuse their rights, consquences will be issued.

Responsibilities & Powers of the Lacrista Government

A. Responsibilities
1) "We the People"- Citizens of Lacrista will have a constitution and will have a queen. They will get to vote on some things, though, such as local interests. Queen Julia's main concern is the happiness of her people.
2) "Establish Justice"- Yes, all people will have rightful justice. Queen Julia will be dutiful to her country and exercise justice, listen to the advice and complaints of her people, and do what is neccessary in her power to make her citizens happy with their country.
3) "Ensure Domestic Tranquility"- The Queen will do her best to make sure that all disputes are settled fairly, listening to both sides. She will not only have her opinion on the dispute, but the opinion of her Council of Advisors as well.
4) "Provide for Common Defense"- Lacrista will have one of the highest safety ratings. The nation's two biggest concerns are the happiness and safety of its people. There will be local, state, and federal police levels as well as national military: army, air force, and navy. Citizens are not to be worried.
*The Federal Lacrista Military*
~ one of the three federal military branches: The National Lacrista Army. The NLA protects Lacrista and her citizens with pride, honor, stealth, technique, and land. 5) "Promote General Welfare"- There will be a constitution of laws that everyone is expected to follow: The Lacrista Constitution. Even the Queen must follow the laws set and act as an example to her citizens. Punishment will find all that disobey the laws.
6) "Ensure Bleesings of Liberty onto Ourselves" AKA EDUCATION- Schools across Lacrista will teach the laws of the Constitution and how to be a good citizen, ensuring each citizens understand his or her rights. The levels of education are:
- Elementary: PreK through Grade 6
- Primary: Grades 7 through 9
- Secondary: Grades 10 through 12
- University: Career choice.
7) "Ensures Blessings of Liberty onto Prosperity"- Be teaching and enforcing the laws, Lacrista will do its best to make sure its youth are pure, good, honest people.

B. Powers
1) "Authoritarian"- The Lacrista government will have Authoritarian powers, but most of the power will reside in the Justice and Medical branch of the government.
2) "Coercive"- Lacrista will use force when neccessary to bring justice and peace. Though peace-keeping is important in Lacrista, the Queen will not hesitate to use force if the safety of her country and people is in danger.
3) "Political Persuasion"- Persuading people that laws are good or bad is fine, if they agree to it. If they wish the law to change, talk to their advisor on the Queen's Council of Advisors, or talk to the Queen herself in the complaint sessions she will have in her palace. Persuading people against the government and queen so that people want to use force is unacceptable. Lacrista will keep its peace, and you may argue with words.
4) "Political Manipulation"- Unacceptable. Each person is in possession of his mind, so he should make his own decisions, that be manipulated into it. This is breaking the laws, and punishment will be given accordingly.

NOTE- Lacrista is a constitutional monarchy, and is very set about its laws!
